I’ve heard of Rachael Ray’s Garbage Bowl that she uses during cooking. It’s basically just a bowl for food scraps and garbage while you’re chopping, cutting, mixing, or whatever. She’s brilliant and made it cute and markets it well.
I’ve honestly thought it was a bit silly to spend money on a garbage bowl when I usually just slide my trash can next to me to collect whatever mess I’m creating. Then last week when I had a few different recipes going at the same time and I kept kicking my trash can that I pulled next to me, I found myself pulling out a bowl just to collect my garbage.
I must admit it was helpful to have that bowl sitting there and I thought again just how smart Rachael Ray is. I also saw this cute “Scrap Trap” you can attach to a drawer. It’s much more affordable, but also much smaller.
What do you think? Do you use a Garbage Bowl? Did you buy one just for that purpose or do you just use any bowl in your cabinet?

I use one almost every single time I cook and I ALWAYS think of her! She’s a marketing genius!
Yes she is!!
I always have a container on the counter to collect scraps, which then go out to the compost pile or to the chickens, depending on what kind of scraps they are. Usually it’s the same pitcher with a lid, but sometimes I just pull out any bowl from the cabinet. My egg shells all get thrown in the sink while I’m cooking and when I have a break I rinse them and set them on the windowsill to dry. When I have a tray-full I bake them in the oven for a few minutes before crushing them up for the chickens for extra calcium. Any boxes, paper or cardboard get folded up and put by the woodstove to burn.
So the only “garbage” that actually goes in the trash would be things like butter wrappers, cheese wrappers, etc. It’s amazing how much removing the food “waste” decreases the volume and smell of the garbage!
I bet it does, Erin! You really do “use” your scraps!
I use one but only because she taught me to. Ha! I love her and I think it’s a fantastic idea!
