Okay, friends. I am in serious need of some suggestions from other moms with little ones, so please weigh in on this post!
When we first moved to China in 2004 and went shopping for dinnerware, there was not much available besides little rice bowls. We found a few large Ikea plates and pasta bowls in one store (not Ikea!), small plates in another, and bowls in yet another. After the kids came along, we got plastic stuff for them. As you can imagine, everything is mismatched. Not only that, but after all of these years we have broken a plate or two (actually not bad as we’ve had those the longest…I think it was always house helpers that broke them…really…) and many bowls (they’re almost gone). Also, I feel like we are using much more cabinet space than necessary because things are all different sizes and don’t fit together well. I’d love a full set of something that matches and something that the whole family can use. We looked around our city trying to find some new things a few months ago, but the only things we liked were well out of our price range for a full set.
A couple of months ago, I read that Corelle dinnerware is nearly unbreakable, so I thought that might be a good option. They aren’t available here in China, so I was thinking I might pack them in one of our 12 suitcases we bring back after our trip to the States next summer. However, I have since read that when they do break, the apparently shatter into many tiny pieces of glass. We have tile floors throughout our apartment. I’m not sure how I feel about tiny pieces of shattered glass.
This weekend I’m taking a trip and while gone, I’ll be spending time in Ikea! I’ve been looking online at their dinnerware options, hoping they had something microwavable but unbreakable. They don’t. BUT, their prices are quite reasonable, so even if we have a few break (apparently large pieces instead of tiny shards of glass), I’ll remember that they were not expensive and are easily replaceable.
There’s the DINERAseries. For about 450RMB/$71USD, I can get 12 place settings including a bowl, small plate, large plate, and deep plate.
There’s the FARGRIKseries. For about 700RMB/$110USD, I can also get 12 place setting including a bowl, small plate, large plate, and deep plate.
Last, theres the IKEA 365+ series. For about 600RMB/$95USD, I can again get 12 place settings, including a bowl, small plate, and large plate. If I wanted the deep plate, I would get those separately, making the total about 900RMB/$142USD.
So, this is where I need your opinions! Am I crazy to think that I can have our whole family eating off of breakable dishes with tile floors and still have anything left in a year? Do you have Corelle or any of the Ikea options, and if so, how have they worked for your family? Do you have something else that has worked well? What do you do for your family? What would you do if you were me?
