A funny story about the granola… We had our local fellowship retreat last spring, and each family had to bring breakfast food to contribute. I made up a huge batches of this granola (the recipe times 4), one with flakes and one without. The second morning of the retreat my husband tried to get a bowl of the granola and an older woman was guarding the little that was left. When he tried to get some, she demanded, “You can only take a little. It’s so good, but it’s almost gone!” When he told her his wife had made it, she let off a little!
Do you have a homemade breakfast food that’s easy and that your family loves?

I was wondering what you meant by turning off the heat. Was that a typo or did I miss the part of turning the heat on?
How funny that a "Honey Bunches of Oats" recipe doesn't contain honey!
What do you mean about spoiling the nutritional value? This nutrition profile for oatmeal says that instant, quick, and regular all have the same nutrients. I buy my quick oats from a bulk bin, and the bin of regular oats next to it shows very nearly the same nutrition facts–a little less fiber and a little more iron in the quick oats.
Malisa, I think the "cook to a boil" part is when you have the heat on.
Becca, I always thought that granola HAD to have honey in it. We tried several recipes with honey before we found this one and were very surprised, like you, that it doesn't contain any honey!
Glad to hear I'm not spoiling it nearly as much as I thought I was with the quick oats!
Malisa, yes, Becca is right. On the stove, heat the water and brown sugar until it boils. You just want to turn the heat off before you add the oil and vanilla into the mixture. Hope that helps!
I think this will be a hit in our home…I look forward to trying it soon!!
I hope they like it, Jen!
Delighted, just delighted to find this copycat granola guide! We do get Honey Bunches here in Pondicherry, but the price of a regular box is about double or more what it would have been in Houston (from where we moved to come here) and I’ve been trying substitutes and duplications since. I’ve followed your recipe and had great results; my kids agreed, too
We just reduced sugar and went a little wild with nuts! Thanks for helping make our mornings that much more satisfying!
Oh good! Great to hear, Deepa! I love when others are enjoying the same stuff we have!
Nuts and reduced sugar sounds great. I’ll have to try it!
